Welcome to the Wedding Music Master Class, updated for 2019. This blog article is published by wedding entertainment specialist Ambient DJ Service. The Wedding Music Master Class is now in its seventh year of publication and contains over 2,500 hand-selected  and field-tested songs.  To our knowledge, there is no publicly available wedding music resource that is more comprehensive and up-to-date than the Ambient DJ Wedding Music Master Class.

Who is Ambient DJ Service? Ambient DJs is a New Jersey-based mobile DJ entertainment company specializing in weddings.  Music is our business – and our passion!  The music study that follows is a collaborative effort among our wedding DJ entertainment team.

Building an appropriate musical playlist for a wedding can be a daunting task. Special songs such as parent dances can be particularly challenging.  Regrettably, there are many inferior musical playlists circulating the internet that were not compiled by working wedding professionals. To that end, we are sharing this Master List of our best song ideas for a wedding: from ceremony music, to the reception celebration with lists for Grand Entrance songs, First Dance, Father-Daughter Dance, Mother-Son Dance, Cake Cutting, Bouquet and Garter songs and Grand Finale songs. We also share our Top 100 Songs for a 2019 Wedding, 100 Themed Wedding Cocktail Hour playlists, 10 Songs NOT to play at a wedding, 7 Musical Programming Tips for a Wedding, sample dance sets and more. The majority of the songs in this blog were used by our actual clients, while the rest were selected with great care with regards to lyrics, mood and danceability.  We generally exclude  songs that are bittersweet in nature, but occasionally make exceptions to accommodate tracks that have become ingrained into American pop culture.

Take a listen to our wedding playlists with the included links on Spotify. We recommend using Spotify as a powerful online resource to help organize your wedding song ideas. Create a free Spotify account, create a playlist, and start adding your song candidates to it (note: the premium Spotify version at just $9.99 per month (first month free) is even more powerful and is highly recommended for music lovers in particular).  Caveat about Spotify – it often does not offer the clean radio edited song versions.  For weddings in particular, we always recommend using clean versions.

Now let’s get into the music!  (click on a table of contents category below to jump to that section)

10 Songs Not to Play at a Wedding

  1. Ignition (Remix) – R. Kelly.   The Pied Piper of R&B’s musical career is over.  This song, or any of this other hits, may well infuriate guests and staff at your local banquet hall.  AVOID!   For some 90s party vibes, try Nelly’s radio-edited version of “Ride Wit Me” or the more recent Bruno Mars hit “That’s What I Like.”
  2. Mo Bamba – Sheck Wes.  Better suited for a high school dance or ratchet afterparty, this song is simply too sleazy – even with an edited version.  For some contemporary hip hop with better lyrics, try Drake’s “Gods Plan”
  3. Hello – Adele. Despite being an emotionally powerful song, this hit single from Adele is a break-up song. Substitute with her cover version of the Cure’s “Lovesong” or Bob Dylan’s “Make You Feel My Love.”
  4. Stay With Me – Sam Smith. In this song, the emotionally tortured protagonist is a master of “one night stands” and proclaims “this ain’t love it’s clear to see, but darling, stay with me” and “deep down I know this never works, but you can lay with me so it doesn’t hurt.” Hardly appropriate wedding fare!  Substitute with “Latch” (Disclosure with Sam Smith) or Smith’s fun cover version of Drake’s “Hotline Bling” set to a house beat.
  5. You’ll Never Find a Love Like Mine – Lou Rawls. This song oozes sex appeal with Rawl’s baritone voice over a vintage piano and strings disco arrangement. However, the premise of the song is that Rawl’s former partner will never find a love as good as his post their breakup. As a substitute, try George McCrae’s “Rock Your Baby.”
  6. Easy – The Commodores.  This song deceptively sounds like a love song for Sunday morning in bed, but actually reflects the protagonist’s easy attitude as he segues out of a torturous relationship.  Lionel Richie fans are better served by wedding ballads like “Endless Love” or “Truly” – or upbeat selections “All Night Long” or “Dancing on the Ceiling.”
  7. Brown Sugar – The Rolling Stones. This infectious rock n’ roll jam regrettably contains lyrics that one music critic describes as “gross, sexist and stunningly offensive to black women” – trust us, the lyrics are that bad. If you love the Stones, try “Satisfaction” “Start Me Up” or another hit song from their extensive catalog.
  8. What’s Going On? – Marvin Gaye. If you enjoy hearing about war, picket lines and police brutality, then play this song at your wedding. Otherwise, try soulful crooner Gaye’s “Aint’ No Mountain High Enough” or super-funky “Got to Give it Up” which your DJ can then skillfully mix into Robin Thicke’s “Blurred Lines.”
  9. The Macarena – Los del Rio. Line dances at a wedding can be great ice breakers. However, this cheesy line dance has grown even more fungus with age. Modernize your wedding with a newer novelty dance such as the “Cupid Shuffle”
  10. Stairway to Heaven – Led Zeppelin. Led Zeppelin is an incredible rock band.  Yet this anthem is hard to dance to with its long, uncomfortable breakdowns. If you must play Zeppelin at your wedding, try “All of My Love” or “Thank You.” For a beach wedding, try their hidden gem “Down by the Seaside.”

Tips for Musical Programming at a Wedding

After engaging the services of a wedding DJ for your special day, a key task in the planning process is picking music for your wedding reception. Some couples are very “hands on” with the playlist, while others give a general direction to their DJ, trusting his or her expertise.

Assuming a four hour reception and 18 songs per hour, you would have a playlist of 72 songs. How many songs should you pick in advance? Our recommendation would be to prepare a list of up to 20 “must play” songs, plus another 20 “play If possible” tracks. That leaves an additional 20 tracks for your DJ to select. However, the DJ will pick these additional songs within your genre parameters. For example, if you love 90s dance music but dislike country music, the DJ would keep the mix within these guidelines.

In picking specific songs for your wedding reception, listed below are seven tips:

  1. Select a variety of musical styles. Your wedding reception will feature a wide range of guest ages, most likely from teenagers to older adults. You would be wise to select songs that cater to the various age brackets, so all guests feel like they are a part of your special day.
  2. Start your dance sets with recognizable oldies. For the initial dance set after your first appetizer course, begin with oldies genres such as 60s Rock, Motown, or Disco, to gain the trust of older guests. By doing so, they are more likely to go with the flow for your modern dance selections later in the night!
  3. Use non-danceable selections for cocktail hour or dinner music. If you enjoy non-danceable genres such as indie rock, use these selections for the atmospheric cocktail hour or dinner music. For open dancing after dinner, this eclectic fare will likely fail and result in a thin or empty dance floor.
  4. For open dancing, gravitate towards mainstream selections. After dinner, the DJ needs to quickly mobilize your diverse group of guests and create a packed dance floor. It is sound advice to use songs that are recognized by most guests! For example, young adults will recognize a classic party jam like “Shout” from the movies, while adult guests will have heard today’s super-hits by the likes of Pitbull, Rihanna or Jennifer Lopez on the radio.
  5. Consider using line dances as icebreakers. Yes, there has been a trend in recent years towards “non-tacky” DJ entertainment with minimal or no line dancing. You know, the usual suspects like the Electric Slide and Cupid Shuffle. That said, for the right crowd, line dances can quickly pack a dance floor with guests of all ages. The DJ can then guide this packed dance floor to the music that you really want to hear.
  6. Include several ballad sets. Wedding receptions are celebrations that should feature a combination of romance and fun. We recommend two or three ballad sets of two songs each. Incorporating slow dancing makes sense because; first, this allows your shy and older guests to join the action. Second, ballads are a welcome relief from extended sets of high tempo dancing. We recommend programming ballads in pairs because typically a couple will not get to the dance floor until the middle of the first song.
  7. Have a detailed discussion about music with your wedding DJ. Professional wedding DJs are highly experienced with musical programming and can provide suggestions that will enhance the quality of your event. Show the DJ your playlist and ask for their candid feedback. Have a detailed discussion with the DJ about your guest demographics that may provide clues on what music will work. Discuss your policy on fielding guest requests, line dances, and your expectations for the dance floor action. If you envision a mellower party, don’t be afraid to let the DJ know that a frenetic dance floor is not your goal.

The 90s Pop Wedding Cocktail Hour

The 97th installment of our wedding cocktail hour series was created on the back of strong recent demand for 90s music by our clientele and party guests.  It seems that the Nineties are sparking the same nostalgia for millennials that the Eighties stokes for Generation X!

Compiled by Ambient DJs’ head honcho Gregg Ambient, the playlist features many of the biggest hit makers of the 90s as well as a few “one hit wonders.”  Track selections gravitate towards fun, light musical fare, perfect to set the tone for an enjoyable wedding reception or other celebration.

For a signature drink, we’ve selected the popular “Cosmopolitan” – a libation that cut its teeth in the Nineties!  To learn how to mix one, see Difford’s recipe by clicking here.

Immediately after the playlist, listen to the playlist on the accompanying Spotify playlist  (unmixed), and enjoy a bonus “80s 90s Something” dance mix which focuses specifically on those songs from the late Eighties and early Nineties.

We also share our Top 100 Songs for a 2017 Wedding, 98 Themed Cocktail Hour playlists, 12 Songs NOT to play at a wedding, 7 Musical Programming Tips for a Wedding, and more. 12 Songs Not to Play at a Wedding

  1. Hello – Adele. Despite being an emotionally powerful song, this hit single off Adele’s recent album is a break-up song. Substitute with her cover version of the Cure’s “Lovesong” or Bob Dylan’s “Make You Feel My Love.”
  5. I Will Survive – Gloria Gaynor. This song is about a woman’s turmoil and strength after a breakup. As a disco alternative at a similar tempo, try Cheryl Lynn’s uplifting “Got To Be Real.”
  8. The Macarena – Los del Rio. Line dances at a wedding can be great ice breakers. However, this cheesy line dance has grown even more fungus with age. Modernize your wedding with a newer novelty dance such as the “Cupid Shuffle”
  10. Gucci Gang – Lil Pump.  A hot 2018 hip song, this song – even in its super clean edited version – has no redeeming lyrical features.  Avoid this ratchet song like the plague for weddings.
  11. MotorSport – Migos w/ Nicki Minaj and Cardi B.  Downtempo dreary drug music whose radio edits do little to sanitize the lyrics and themes.  Save this song for the afterparty!
  12. Get It Together – Drake w/ Black Coffee.  Regrettably, Drake ruined the original soulful house version by Black Coffee with tortured and profain lyrics.

Tips for Musical Programming at a Wedding

After engaging the services of a wedding DJ for your special day, a key task in the planning process is picking music for your wedding reception. Some couples are very “hands on” with the playlist, while others give a general direction to their DJ, trusting his or her expertise.

Assuming a four hour reception and 15 songs per hour, you would have a playlist of 60 songs.

If you found these playlists and tips helpful, for even more ideas check out our book available on Amazon “The Bride’s Guide to Selecting the Perfect Wedding DJ”.

DJ Gregg Ambient’s Top 40 Song Countdown of 2017

Happy New Year party people!

Methodology – I am a mobile DJ based in Central New Jersey and spin in a variety of settings from weddings to bars/clubs.  I am particularly fond of electronic and international music.  The selected songs below incorporate all styles of music and tempos with the songs in the #25 – #40 slots representing some songs that were personally enjoyable to me, but that may not have charted well or been heavily requested.  The Top 25 songs of 2017 are highly correlated to requests and dance floor impact captured at my 200+ performances during the year.

Musical Trends –  It’s a an exciting era to to be a DJ with so much music available across a variety of mediums.  The increasing popularity of streaming services like Spotify has enabled me to easily explore and organize all of the music from across the globe that I could ever want.  One of my other favorite places to research music is in the car listening to commercial-free Sirius radio.  Currently my favorite channels are Venus (Rhythmic Pop) and Chill (Channel 53).  Is there a catchy song in your daily travels that you want to identify?  Of course, use the free app Shazam.

As previously identified by my colleague Mike Bacon (aka, DJ Iron Mike), euphoric EDM music faded from the musical scene in 2017 and was replaced by a demand for mid-tempo tropical house compositions or collaborations between electronic producers like Calvin Harris with rappers like Migos.  “Trap Rap” (aka “drug music”) remained immensely popular with artists like Future, Migos and Lil Uzi Vert, and exotic dancer turned rapper Cardi B blew up big time with her hit song “Bodak Yellow.”  Ed Sheeran had a great year with Shape of You, Galway Girl and several ballads.  The members of “One Direction” also achieved great acclaim as solo artists in 2017 with hits like “Slow Hands” (Niall Horan) “Sign of the Times” (Harry Styles) and “Strip That Down” (Liam Payne).  Latin music was big in the pop arena, with mega hits by J. Balvin (“Mi Gente”) and Luis Fonsi (“Despacito”).

As we look into 2018, DJs crave a musical breakthrough with a new sound – and hopefully one that is more upbeat and dance floor friendly than trap rap at its dreary 60 to 70 beats per minute tempo.

Check out the list below, and you can listen to the songs on the Spotify playlist embedded later in this blog.

DJ Gregg’s Top 40 Countdown of 2017

40. Lights – Bobby Green f/ Whitney Philips (tropical house)

39. YES – Sam Feldt w/ Akon  (tropical house) * Love the warm happy feeling of this track and the synthesized Caribbean steel drums.

38. Strip That Down – Liam Payne w/ Quavo (R&B) * One Direction alumnus.

37. Call the Police – LCD Soundsystem (dance punk)

36. Perfect – Ed Sheeran (pop ballad) * The wedding ballad of Fall 2017 may become the wedding ballad of 2018!  A welcome development as wedding guests are tiring of Sheeran’s “Thinking Out Loud”

35. Versace on the Floor – Bruno Mars (pop ballad) * Best suited for adult audiences.

34. Attention – Charlie Puth (pop) * I suggest using a remix to juice up the tempo and reduce some of the uncomfortable slowdowns in the original.

33. Sign of the Times – Harry Styles (pop) * One Direction alumnus

32. Body Like a Back Road – Sam Hunt (Country) – the top pop country hit of 2017!

31. Tennessee Whiskey – Chris Stapleton (Country) – while this bluesy cover version was released in 2015, the song’s full power has grown on me like a fine Tennessee whiskey.

30. Game of Thrones Theme (Armin Van Buuren Remix) – Ramin Djawadi (soundtracks/trance)  * “Winter is Coming” but this song can ignite dance floors.

29. New Rules – Dua Lipa (pop)  * part rap, part pop – Dua Lipa’s unique vocal delivery works.

28. Disco T*ts – Tove Lo (pop/electronic) * Definitely opt for the radio edited version of this Swedish star’s song when families are in the building.  For a good laugh, check out the music video.

27. Rockstar – Post Malone w/ 21 Savage (hip hop / R&B).  * 21 Savage’s deadpan rap delivery will grow on you with time.

26. I Feel It Coming – The Weeknd w/ Daft Punk (R&B) * One of the only songs to repeat from the 2016 playlist.  The Weeknd with Daft Punk is a divine collaboration.

25. It’s Everyday Bro – Jake Paul w/ Team 10 (YouTube Rap).  * This is an example of the type of track being requested by teen dance audiences.  Songs that may not be commercially available (although this one is).  This track logged 167 million YouTube views.

24. Passionfruit – Drake (R&B)  * DJs, be sure to edit out the false start to this song.

23. Dile Que Tu Me Quieres – Ozuna (Latin/Reggaeton)

22. Vente Pa’ Ca’ = Ricky Martin w/ Maluma (Latin)

21. Slow Hands – Niall Horan (pop) * One Direction alumnus.

20. Malibu (Lost Frequencies Remix) – Miley Cyrus (pop/electronic)

19. Sorry Not Sorry – Demi Lovato (pop)

18. Chantaje – Shakira w/ Maluma (Latin/Reggaeton)

17. Rollin – Calvin Harris w/ Future and Khalid (electronic / R&B)

16. Slide – Calvin Harris w/ Frank Ocean and Migos (electronic / R&B)

15. Unforgettable – French Montana w/ Swae Lee (Hip Hop / R&B)

14. Wild Thoughts – DJ Khaled w/ Rihanna and Bryson Tiller (R&B) * DJs, of course you’d want to mix this with “Maria Maria” by Santana.

13. Humble – Kendrick Lamar (hip hop)

12. Mask Off – Future (hip hop)  * The hypnotic flute and Future’s chants of popular street drug names will draw you in.

11. Redbone – Childish Gambino (R&B)  * Such a soulful track!  DJ Iron Mike suggests the “Nick Bike Edit” – check it out here

10. Feel It Still – Portugal. The Man (alternative rock)  * Portugal.  The Man, a band from Alaska, has been together since the early 2000s and finally scored big with this hit!

9. Havana – Camila Cabello w/ Young Thug (pop)

8. Can’t Stop the Feeling – Justin Timberlake (pop)  * Despite being released in 2016, the song’s presence and dance floor power remained strong in 2017.

7. Bad and Boujee – Migos f/ Lil Uzi Vert (hip hop).  * This song was massive in the first 4-5 months of 2017 but faded fast thereafter.  Lil’ Pump’s “Gucci Gang” (not included in this year’s countdown) could be 2018’s Bad and Boujee equivalent.

6. That’s What I Like – Bruno Mars (pop)  * This feel good sing-a-long by Mars is a great late night selection.

5. Mi Gente –  J. Balvin w/ Willy William (Latin/Reggaeton) * whether you opt for the original version or remix with Beyonce, this song’s intoxicating groove works on dance floors.

4. Bodak Yellow – Cardi B. (hip hop) * Cardi’s unique rap cadence and swagger made her an international superstar in 2017.

3. Shape of You – Ed Sheeran (pop) * A great party starter… for added percussion, we recommend DJ Cloak Dagger‘s Shape of You Moombahton Edit.

2. Despacito (remix) – Luis Fonsi w/ Daddy Yankee and Justin Bieber (Latin/Reggaeton).  This massive global hit has scored 4.6 BILLION YouTube views just on the original version of the song alone.

1. 24K Magic – Bruno Mars (pop).  It’s my first ever repeat #1 song!  Released on November 18, 2016, I saw the power of this track early on.  As predicted, 24k became a massive dance floor success with the right energy to get guests moving and grooving.. “players, put yo pinky rings up to the moon!”

Worst Song of 2017“Everyday We Lit” – YFN Lucci f/ PnB Rock.  A childish, ridiculous song!  Runner-up would be “Get It Together” by Drake that bastardizes the original song “Superman” by Black Coffee.

The Yacht Rock Wedding Cocktail Hour (Volume One)

For the 90th installment of the Ambient DJ wedding cocktail hour playlist series, Mike Bacon, aka DJ Iron Mike, shares thirty of his favorite “yacht rock” cuts.  What is yacht rock?  According to Wikipedia,

“In the musical sense, yacht rock refers to the highly polished brand of soft rock that emanated from Southern California between 1976 and 1984. The term is meant to suggest the kind of smooth, mellow music that early yuppies likely enjoyed while sipping champagne and snorting cocaine on their yachts. Significant “yacht rockers” include Michael McDonald, Kenny Loggins, Christopher Cross, and Toto.”

In other words, yacht rock doesn’t necessarily involve nautical themes – although it can – it’s more a musical aesthetic.  Disclaimer:  for the playlist that follows, even though it is for a wedding, we’ve allowed a few songs with bittersweet themes.  Our thinking is that having an authentically feeling yacht rock playlist is more important than maintaining an air of perfect romance.Sex_on_Beach_Project_Cocktail

For a signature drink, Mike has selected “Sex on the Beach” – a nod to the decadence of the yacht rock era.  Learn how to mix one by clicking here.

Immediately after the playlist, listen to Mike’s selected songs on a special Spotify playlist.

New Summer Mix 2017 by Ambient DJs

To celebrate the ongoing summer season, Ambient DJ Service has release a summer mixtape.  Titled “Hot Summer 2017” and compiled and mixed by DJ Gregg Ambient, the one hour mix is open format, fusing a range of musical genres.

The mix starts with stone cold classics by Kool & the Gang and Roy Ayers, before dropping a sultry bootleg rework of Sade’s “Love You More” from the Noc Boots record label run by DJ Cloak Dagger.  Then, onto the moody Lost Frequencies remix of Miley Cyrus’ “Malibu” and a recent electronic offering from Kaskade.  Calvin Harris’ tropical house/hip hop fusion offerings have been a huge innovation of 2017 – and we highlight two of his tracks “Rollin” and “Holiday.”

From here, Santana’s “Maria, Maria” gets mixed into DJ Khaled’s “Wild Thoughts,” and from here the dance beats kicks in nicely, starting with DJ Cloak Dagger and his moombahton edit of Ed Sheeran’s “Shape of You,” followed by journeys into Latin music, reggae and pop. The set concludes with Luis Fonsi’s smash hit “Despacito.”

The mix can be enjoyed for free on Mixcloud via the player below.  Enjoy the rest of your summer party people!  To learn more about Ambient DJ Service, visit us online at www.ambientdj.com.
